When to Go to Phuket?

You’ll hear many opinions about the best time of year to go to Phuket – the fact is, it’s a very personal question…

Phuket Island in the south of Thailand is commonly referred to as the pearl of the “Andaman Sea.” Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and welcomes thousands of tourists every year with its irresistible combination of breathtaking scenic beauty, spectacular islands and bays, amazing Thai hospitality and wonderful cuisine. In fact, amongst seasoned travellers it is argued that Phuket’s southern beaches are the best in Thailand, if not the entire world!

If you are planning to visit Phuket then the only question that should never bother you is “When to go to Phuket?” Each seasonal period has it’s own key selling points, making it easy to find a reason to visit Phuket at any time of the year! Here is some information to try and help you with that one tricky question… “When to go to Phuket?”

Phuket is only 7° degrees north of the equator, and boasts of a tropical climate with an influence of monsoonal weather governed mainly by the direction of the monsoon winds. This ensures that Phuket is warm all through the year except for the hot weather during April & May with the period between September & October being the wettest in Phuket, but despite this, the rainfall is usually brief and heavy rather than long and drawn out.

Phuket is great to visit at any time of the year. Traditionally, the busiest time is from late October until mid April, with the Christmas/New Year period being the absolute peak season. During these times you will need to book well in advance to avoid disappointment. November till April is the period when Phuket enjoys the cool breezes caused by the North East monsoon season and minimal rainfall. At this time of the year it is not uncommon to get periods of 30 days or more or uninterrupted sunshine, the climate is not too humid, and the cool breezes blowing make the region very comfortable. Average temperature’s during this season hover around 79° F to 89° F (26° C to 32° C). So, if you are really very much concerned about when to go to Phuket, then choose this season to enjoy your Phuket vacation to the fullest. Of course the increase in popularity does mean its a little bit more expensive and a bit harder to find that elusive deserted beach! The hottest period in Phuket is from April-May, when temperatures range from 80° F to 95° F (27° C to 36° C).

If you are looking forward to avoiding the crowds and taking advantage of the low-season discounted rates for accommodation and services for your holiday in Phuket, you should consider traveling during the other months. You shouldn’t worry too much about the Phuket weather; Even during the monsoon period short rain squalls are interspersed with beautiful sunny periods, usually most of the rain comes during the night, and the days can be fantastic and peaceful. Even as I write this at the end of June, there is a beautiful blue sky with puffy white clouds and if it wasn’t for the lack of tourists and the blowing on-shore winds, I would be hard pressed to tell it wasn’t the middle of high season! Which means you can still enjoy the full range of outdoor activities available here. Depending on your budget the money you could save could easily offset any concerns about a little bit of rainfall.
